Mum said the fairy would come only
if Polly was asleep.
But couldn’t she stay awake, just this once,
to see the special fairy?
Polly’s Tooth is a picture book written and illustrated by Zali Schelling (aged 10). It was written for a story book competition held by Greater Shepparton Council. The competition was open to all Grade 5 and 6 students attending a primary school in the region. Students were invited to write and illustrate an original story to be considered as part of the Greater Shepparton Book Bag Program, which provides book bags to children attending their 4-week, 8-month, 18-month and 3.5-year maternal and child health check-up.
There were 21 finalists chosen from 8 primary schools. Zali was one.
The 3-person judging panel, led by Anne Tomietto, the Goulburn Valley Regional Library Operations Manager, had the tricky task of deciding a winner from the fantastic entries. Ms Tomietto said, “The entries received were of a very high standard, and we, as judges, found it very difficult to choose a winner.”
Former Greater Shepparton Mayor Jenny Houlihan said, “The response received to this competition was excellent and I congratulate everyone who took the time to write and illustrate their own book.”
